Cathay Tree Gains New Lease on Life After Undergoing Surgery for Brown Root Rot Disease

The iconic Cathay Tree has been given a new lease on life after successfully undergoing a major tree surgery. 

The tree was diagnosed in October, 2024 with Brown Root Rot disease, an aggressive fungal infection that erodes the root system and severely compromises a tree's ability to transport water and vital nutrients.

In a dedicated effort to save the historic tree and ensure its long-term health, National Central University commissioned a team of arboricultural specialists to perform a complex surgical intervention. The operation, which spanned from April to June 2025, was successfully completed to secure the survival and future growth of the beloved landmark.
